Scammell Furniture is a new business specialising in the high quality end of the domestic furniture and joinery market. The company was formed in March 2004 by Grant Scammell, as the logical development of his 18 year Cabinetmaking career.
Grant has a very strong personal desire to achieve results to the highest of his ability. Therefore, it was with great excitement that he left high school at the age of sixteen, to start a four-year cabinetmaking apprenticeship in New Zealand. Working with wood had been a hobby, taught to him by his grandfather. This enthusiasm took him to 'Apprentice of the Year', two years in a row at the National Polytechnic Training School. After passing his trade exams with flying colours, he went on to complete a further two years of Advanced Trade qualifications, where the focus moved towards financial and business management studies.
Not one to stand still, he decided to travel overseas and expand his experience further. After a nationwide selection process, he was very fortunate to be chosen by the 'New Zealand Craftsman Training Foundation', for a work and study Scholarship in Sydney, in 1991. This move was to test his skills at a much higher level. Working for a large office fit-out company he was building general office furniture, reception desks, then moved up to boardroom tables, and executive furniture.
After briefly returning to New Zealand to fore fill his scholarship obligations, he immigrated back to Sydney in 1993. This time working for a small furniture & joinery business, in the domestic market. Grants' quality workmanship helped the company gain exposure in the glossy Interior magazines of 'Belle' and 'Vogue Living'. His eleven years experience here and his continued enthusiasm, took him to production manager of this business and the execution of some very high quality furniture fit-outs, for some of Sydney's top Interior Designers & Architects.
Grant has now 'realised his dream', with the opening of his own factory at Hornsby. A small company, specialising predominantly in the manufacture of domestic joinery and furniture items. It is focused on that section of the market implementing architecturally designed projects, requiring joinery of an exceptional quality. This is achieved through a small team of cabinetmakers and specialised sub-contractors, who will offer a very personalised service maintaining a great level of care and thus customer satisfaction.
"It is very rewarding for us to see a client's pleasure in a job well done"
It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little.
When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all.
When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything,
because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the job you bought it to do.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot.
It can't be done.
If you deal with the lowest bidder, it's well to add something for the risk you run,
and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better."
